A combination of strong mobile-PC sales and regional macroeconomic growth drove personal computer shipments in Latin America to more than 5.6 million units in the second quarter of 2007, an increase of 38 percent over the same period in 2006, according to Gartner.
Mobile-PC sales increased 84 percent in the second quarter of 2007, and substantially helped drive estimated overall PC revenue up 45 percent to $3.7 billion. HP, Positivo Informatica and Dell led the overall PC market for the quarter.
"It was a very strong quarter for PC manufacturers, as almost all international and local PC vendors grew in double digits," said Luis Anavitarte, vice president and research director for Gartner’s Latin American research.
"The macroeconomic growth in the majority of Latin American countries is rapidly raising the emerging middle class bar while enhancing and creating businesses, therefore allowing for higher demand of PCs throughout the continent. This is a symptom of the growing adoption of IT throughout the region."
Hewlett Packard expanded its leadership to 15.2 percent market share in the second quarter of 2007. HP’s overall unit shipment increase was 77 percent, while its mobile-PC business grew almost 122 percent.
Local Brazilian PC vendor Positivo Informatica captured the second position in the overall PC market, and fifth in mobile PC shipments. Positivo grew its PC business 92 percent and garnered 6.8 percent of regional market share.
"Mobile PC sales reached 1.1 million systems and represented 20 percent of the total PC market in Latin America. Fifty-two percent of these systems were purchased by the home and small-business segments, with retail sales being at the core of these results," Ana vitarte said.
Venezuela, Argentina and Peru posted the largest growth rates. However, shipments in Brazil reached 2.5 million units and garnered 44 percent of regional market share in the second quarter of 2006. Mexico was the second-largest country with 16.4 percent of the Latin American PC market, and Argentina followed with 10.3 percent of the market. Only Mexico and Puerto Rico posted declines in market share versus the second quarter of 2006.
