Latin American countries are better positioned to weather a slowdown in the U.S. economy and turmoil in global financial markets, said Anoop Singh, director for the Western Hemisphere at the International Monetary Fund.
``The macro economic fundamentals in the region are strong, with fiscal and current account surpluses,'' said Singh, speaking in Washington in an embargoed press interview on Nov. 6, ahead of the release of the IMF's regional outlook for the Western Hemisphere. ``For small shocks the region has become quite resilient.''
The IMF forecasts the U.S. economy will grow 1.9 percent in 2008, down from a forecast of 2.8 percent made in July.
Singh said Latin American economies would be hurt should the U.S. economy suffer a greater slowdown or if the premium demanded by investors to place money in the emerging market bonds increased significantly
